The supply of hotels is huge, so prices can be surprisingly low, and last minute often works out cheaper than booking far ahead. Guests stay about four nights on average and move by metro between the Bund, People's Square and the Lujiazui towers. The priciest district is Pudong with the Lujiazui towers, where a stay can run as much as two thirds above the city average and where you are closest to the business heart of the city. The most convenient for sightseeing is Huangpu, by the Bund and People's Square, within metro reach of the main sights. Hongkou by the northern Bund is popular too. The cheapest sleep is on the outskirts, in Jiading to the northwest, where rates run about a third below the average. The vast metro ties the whole city together, so a base further from the centre is still convenient.

Jiading on the outskirts usually has the lowest prices, about a third below the city average. Pudong with the Lujiazui towers is the most expensive. For sightseeing, Huangpu by the Bund is the most convenient. With the vast metro, a base further out is still convenient.
Huangpu, by the Bund and People's Square, is the easiest choice. From here you can walk to the waterfront with its Pudong view and reach the Lujiazui towers and the East Nanjing Road promenade in a few minutes by metro.
Shanghai has two airports: Pudong (PVG) in the east for long-haul flights and Hongqiao (SHA) in the west mainly for domestic and regional routes. Hotels by the airports start at roughly CNY 410 per night, and many offer a free shuttle.
The metro is the easiest way, as it is vast, cheap and reaches most sights and both airports. Taxis are inexpensive but get stuck in rush-hour traffic. The Bund area is pleasant to explore on foot.
